Having lived in Vietnam for 14 years, I’ve experienced the unique energy of the April 30 holiday every year. But this year carries special significance—marking 50 years since the Liberation of the South and National Reunification. Reflecting on Vietnam’s incredible transformation since the war, especially in areas like transportation infrastructure and economic development, I’m deeply impressed. Once a country facing immense challenges, Vietnam has risen to become one of the fastest-growing economies in Southeast Asia.
This year, 2025, is also a milestone for Vietnam-US relations, as it marks 30 years since the establishment of diplomatic ties. This moment presents exciting opportunities for expanded collaboration in culture, education, economy, and technology. As an American living and working in Vietnam, I look forward to the new developments in Vietnam - US relations.
I hope to see greater economic and trade cooperation between the two nations. While U.S. investment has focused heavily on high-tech sectors with giants like Amazon, Google, and Nvidia, there is enormous potential to expand support to small and medium-sized enterprises—especially in manufacturing, where Vietnam is rapidly positioning itself as a key hub in the global supply chain.
Currently, the majority of foreign direct investment (FDI) in Vietnam is directed toward the production of goods for the U.S. market. I hope that trade policies between the two nations will continue to evolve, fostering an environment where both sides can strengthen their strategic partnership in production and sustainable development.
People-to-people exchanges play a crucial role in deepening bilateral ties. While education and science have been traditional avenues of cooperation, I believe that music, entertainment, and cuisine also serve as powerful cultural bridges.
I’d love to see Vietnam expand its cooperation with U.S. film studios and producers. It would be exciting to see more Vietnamese TV series featuring international actors and crews, especially from the U.S. With the right support—both in policy and technology transfer—Vietnam could become a major destination for global film projects, creating incredible opportunities for the local industry.
American music has not fully explored its potential in Vietnam yet. I’d love to see more international music events featuring renowned American artists performing in Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi, and Hue. These events wouldn’t just bring incredible entertainment but also create an important space for cultural exchange between artists and audiences.
Food is another universal language that connects people. American cuisine has been warmly received in Vietnam, and I hope to see more efforts to promote Vietnamese food internationally. Pho, which has already gained immense popularity in the U.S., has the potential to become a global cultural symbol of Vietnam. By combining culinary promotion with a smart communication strategy, Vietnam can further elevate its international presence and bring its unique flavors to more people around the world.
