At 7:30 a.m. on a typical day, Le Van Hung, an oil and gas specialist working at Malaysia’s national oil corporation Petronas, would be heading to the pier for his daily commute to the office. However, on April 30, he delayed his departure to watch the live broadcast of the Reunification Day celebration in Ho Chi Minh City with his family.

Having lived abroad since 2012, Hung was unable to return home to experience the celebratory atmosphere in person. Nonetheless, he remains deeply connected to his homeland, sharing his emotions with friends and loved ones. He described the 50th anniversary celebration as a chance to reflect on a long and difficult journey, and to honor the achievements the country has made since reunification.
“We rewatched precious footage of historic, painful yet heroic moments, and felt deeply the sacrifices of previous generations. I’m proud of my homeland and of the nation’s efforts in building a better future since reunification. We often remind our children to value history, to be grateful for those sacrifices, and to take pride in our nation's victories,” Hung said.
He added that despite living far from the S-shaped land of Vietnam, he and other overseas Vietnamese regularly follow news from home, especially major policy decisions of the Party and Government. They have strong faith in the nation's bright future. He hopes the remaining wounds of war will continue to be healed, and that Vietnamese people around the world will unite in contributing to the country’s continued growth and prosperity.
Nguyen Thuy Thien Huong, a lecturer in the Vietnamese Department at a university in Malaysia, also watched the full broadcast of the 50th Reunification Day parade with her husband and children. “Every image, every sound carried a deep sense of national joy, solidarity, and pride. It felt as if we were right there in the streets of Ho Chi Minh City,” she shared.
For Huong, April 30 is a sacred reminder of the resilience and unyielding spirit of the Vietnamese people — a spirit she felt alive in every marching step of the parade and in the hearts of all Vietnamese. Though half a century has passed, that spirit remains as strong as ever.
As an overseas Vietnamese, Huong is deeply aware of the importance of preserving historical memory and patriotism for future generations. “I want my children to witness and feel the heroic chapters of our nation’s history so that even if they grow up far from home, they will understand Vietnam’s past, cherish peace, and take pride in their roots,” she said.
Cao Tat Minh, former chairman of the Thai-Vietnamese Association in Khon Kaen, said he was filled with indescribable pride when watching the ceremony and parade. He was particularly moved to see military delegations from China, Laos, and Cambodia joining the major event.
Especially striking for him was the speech delivered by General Secretary To Lam during the ceremony. Minh noted that Vietnam is clearly rising strongly, making remarkable progress and uniting its people as it steps confidently into a new era — an era of national resurgence.

Nguyen Van Cam, an overseas Vietnamese entrepreneur living in Thailand, emphasized that although he lives far from home, Vietnam remains his origin, his pride, and his motivation. “I am committed to always supporting my homeland through concrete actions,” he said. Participating in the 50th Reunification Day celebrations filled him with pride and a deeper appreciation for the values of peace, independence, and freedom — hard-earned by generations of Vietnamese.
