A delegation of the British Consulate General in Ho Chi Minh City, together with consultants of Mott MacDonald and UN-Habitat, have just launched the Global Future Cities Programme in the City.
After spending more than one year in project development, the British Consulate General, together with UN-HABITAT's technical support, has decided to grant HCMC non-refundable funding for 2 projects: Developing smart ticketing system for public transportation, and Building geographical information systems (GIS) for the drainage network.
When completed in 2022, the projects are expected to contribute positively to the urban development process in HCMC towards global sustainable development goals.
Earlier, Ian Gibbons, Consul General of the UK in Ho Chi Minh City, and representatives of the City, on July 17 signed the memorandum of understanding (MoU) on cooperation in carrying out projects to support the building of HCM City as a smart urban area.
The Global Future Cities Programme is part of the UK's Prosperity Fund, which is carrying out 30 projects in 19 cities in 10 countries around the world. Traffic and flood control have been 2 "hot" fields in HCMC for many years due to insufficient budget to implement the planned projects.
The UK is now HCM City’s biggest trade partner with two-way trade reaching 761 million USD in 2018. The UK ranks 11th among 106 countries and territories investing in the city, with 147 projects worth over 600 million USD./.
