Quang Ninh has 38 bears in captivity in the cities of Ha Long, Cam Pha, Uong Bi, towns of Quang Yen, Dong Trieu and Van Don district.
Since 2014, the number of bears dying in the province increased sharply for a number of reasons, including the bears’ natural life-cycle and the standard of their habitat and varying care.
Before the situation, the authorities of the province requested that the owners of bears hand over the captive bears to the Tam Dao Bear Rescue Centre to ensure their care and nurture; the related authorities have worked with the Animals Asia Foundation and the Vinh Phuc province-based Tam Dao bear rescue centre to support owners of bears to quickly transfer.
At the meeting, representatives of the Animals Asia Foundation expressed their willingness to support expenditure to transport the bears to the Tam Dao bear rescure center as well as funding for the care of the bears at the center. Meanwhile, the owners of the bears suggested that if they hand over their bears to the centre, the Animals Asia Foundation will support finance to them.
Mr. Dang Duy Hau praised the participation and straight ideas of the owners of bears. He asked them to continue to care for the bears until handing over. He also asked to commend and present financial support to households who delivered their bears as well as find solutions to moving the bears to the center safely./.
