On May 3, Mexico's largest left-wing daily journal, La Jornada, published an article titled "Mexico and Vietnam Celebrate 50 Years of Relations with Trade Promotion Activities," highlighting the development of the two countries' friendship in recent times. The article also highlights commemorative activities on this occasion.

Author Kyra Núñez started the article by mentioning that activities held this month to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Mexico-Vietnam diplomatic relations (May 19, 1975) will contribute to promoting greater interest in the potential for bilateral cooperation in all areas, from diplomacy to trade.

The article quotes Mexican Ambassador to Vietnam Alejandro Negrín Muñoz, who spoke at a seminar on the current situation and prospects of bilateral relations held on the afternoon of April 23 in Hanoi, that Mexico and Vietnam possess significant similarities.

Both countries are emerging mid-sized economies with regional influence and are working to reduce poverty and social inequality.

The bilateral relationship has been strengthened and developed strongly over the past years thanks to regular political contacts and dialogues, coordination at multilateral forums, as well as mutual support in the international arena.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum and Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh met within the framework of the G20 Summit held on November 18 in Rio de Janeiro (Brazil). The two sides assessed that there is much room to improve bilateral cooperation. The two sides need to maintain regular cooperation through mechanisms such as the Joint Committee on Economic-Trade and Investment Cooperation and political consultations between the two Ministries of Foreign Affairs.

Ambassador Negrín Muñoz said Mexico and Vietnam have great potential to develop bilateral cooperation in all areas, such as politics, economics, trade, investment, culture, and education.

In particular, bilateral trade relations have grown significantly in recent years thanks to the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP), of which both countries are signatories.

According to the Mexican Ministry of Economy, two-way trade turnover in 2024 reached around USD 15 billion, an increase of 27.5% over the previous year.

Vietnamese enterprises, such as Formula Air, Vinfast, and FPT, have created momentum for development and investment in Mexico. However, enterprises of the two countries face institutional and legal obstacles and high logistics costs. Therefore, the two sides need to maintain political dialogue, increase trade promotion, and investment.

To conclude the article, the author emphasized that Mexico was one of the first Latin American countries to establish diplomatic relations with Vietnam when the Vietnamese people had just won the just war for independence and national unification. The relations have developed and borne fruit in both the economic and cultural fields, based on political dialogue over the past time.

La Jornada mentioned activities that the Mexican Embassy to Vietnam plans to organize to celebrate the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations, including art exhibitions, the launch of the Vietnamese translation of The Wild Book by Juan Villoro, and the promotion of Mexican cuisine in Hanoi.
